Damon: I’ve made a lot of choices that have gotten me here. I deserve this. I deserve to die.
Elena: No. You don’t.
Damon: I do, Elena. It’s okay… because if I had chosen differently I wouldn’t have met you. I’m so sorry. I’ve done so many things to hurt you.
Elena: It’s okay. I forgive you.
Damon: I know you love Stefan, and it will always be Stefan… but I love you. You should know that.
Elena: I do.
Damon: You should have met me in 1864. You would have liked me.
Elena: I like you now. Just the way you are.

The Return vs. The Last Dance: Delena Diaries
I feel like the writers of The Vampire Diaries love parallels because there are so many of them in the show… especially for Delena! The Return and The Last Dance are basically parallel episodes in terms of Delena development.
________________________________
- Damon held onto Elena’s hands because he wanted desperately for their relationship to be where he wanted it… making her uncomfortable vs Damon held onto Elena’s hands to reassure her that they would beat Klaus since they’ve beat threats before… successfully relaxing her.
- Damon killed Jeremy as an impulsive reaction to being hurt by Elena’s rejection; he wanted to be hated vs Damon let Bonnie “die” in order to keep Elena safe; he didn’t want to be hated, but it didn’t matter to him because he has his priorities in line ← Damon went from selfish to selfless.
- Elena’s “it’s always gonna be Stefan” vs Damon’s “I will always… choose… YOU” ← I think this was Damon kind of combating what Elena said in the beginning by using an “always” line of his own, I think this broke Elena’s resolve towards the end since she kept looking back towards Damon.
- Elena’s “I hate him…” vs Damon’s “I’ll even let her hate/hit me” ← In The Return, Damon hurt Elena to get her to hate him, but in The Last Dance, Damon put her well-being before his need to have Elena where he wants her. He doesn’t want her hate, but he’ll accept it if he can keep her safe.
- And in the end of The Last Dance, Damon and Elena actually came to an understanding no matter how much Elena disagrees with no-nonsense method of protecting her (hence her Elijah-related retaliation at the end lol)… unlike the end of The Return in which Damon had built up a wall in between him and Elena.
